Students compete in academics competitions several times a year. Called ?Olympiads? these events are a way for schools to measure themselves against their peers and to encourage hard work by students and teachers. A competitive atmosphere was often put in place during Ukraine's Soviet Era. Winners were heavily rewarded and this gave administrators a way to encourage hard work since salaries were predetermined. .Killia, southeastern Ukraine.
